What is a Doula?

What is a birth doula?

A birth doula is an experienced professional who provides continuous physical and emotional support to the mother before, during and just after birth.  Studies have shown that doula-attended labours are shorter, with fewer complications, and that babies are healthier and breastfeed more easily.

 As your birth doula, I:

  • Recognize birth as a key experience that you will remember all your life
  • Understand the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of labour
  • Will assist you in preparing and carrying out your birth plans
  • Will stay with you throughout labour, from the point that you feel you need me
  • Will provide emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping you get the information you need to make informed decisions
  • Perceive my role as nurturing and of protecting your memory of the birth experience
  • Encourage your partner to participate at his/her comfort level
  • Will provide breastfeeding support in the early postpartum, as well as providing resources for the postpartum
